Father and Child

Mother and child is one of art’s oldest subjects. Father and child is surprisingly rare. Here two interlocking marble blocks form the father, a many-sided being of rough and smooth faces, fierce and tender at once. At his center he holds a gentle hollow, a nest, and in it rests his child: a lustrous sphere of shungite, a small, perfect world of her own. She will thrive in this sheltered space until she outgrows it and develops facets of her own. One day she will become a safe harbor herself, and the cycle will turn back to mother and child.
