Pietrasanta

I work from a studio in Pietrasanta, a small town at the foot of the Apuan Alps in Tuscany, where the white marble of nearby Carrara has been quarried since Roman times. Michelangelo came to these mountains to select his stone; for five centuries since, sculptors have followed the same road for the same reason. To carve here is to work inside a living tradition rather than alongside a historical one.

What drew me, and what keeps me, is threefold. There is the sheer capacity of the place, the quarries, the foundries, the master artisans and the equipment that make genuinely ambitious work possible, from the intimate to the monumental. There is the community: Pietrasanta gathers sculptors from around the world, and the daily exchange among them sharpens everything. And there is the depth of the Italian artistic tradition itself, an inexhaustible source I draw from constantly, not to imitate, but to stay in conversation with the sculptors who shaped what stone can mean.

Every work on this site begins here, in the dust and bustle of the studio, in dialogue with the stone.
