Four Women

Dedicated to the memory of a dear friend, this column holds the four women who shaped his life and were shaped by it. Two left their imprint on him: his mother and his wife, pressed into the stone as hollows. Two were molded by him: his daughters, rising from his sides as full, rounded forms. Taken in and given out, received and passed on, these marks outline the figure at the center. He is defined less by his own edges than by the people who surrounded him.
